Live wedding paintings are both a new addition to the modern wedding world and a revival of past traditions. Dating back to the Renaissance period - long before photography, fine artists would be commissioned to paint and capture the most important life events. (I’m hoping that in the next few months I can gather some event paintings from past artists and write a blog post about it!).

Today, live painters paint traditional artwork at weddings to create a one of a kind masterpiece that you and your partner will be able to enjoy for the rest of your lives, as well as pass down within your family. Here are some things to think about when you are selecting an artist to create a live wedding painting for you:

Artistic Style

Every artist has a different style. If you are looking for a painting that looks just like you, you will want an artist who paints with realism. Want something more imaginative? Consider an artist that paints in an impressionistic or abstract style. The best way to find out which artist’s style you like is to look through their past work and portfolios to find a style that resonates with you. Oftentimes too, artists can paint in more than one style so it’s always a good idea to reach out and let them know what it is you’re looking for.

Enjoying the company of your wedding vendors is so important - they’ll be supporting you throughout your big day. Some artists need their full attention on their artwork while painting, and some revel in the interaction with you and your guests, some may even pass the brush over to you! The best way to determine how an artist will interact with you and your guests at your wedding is to meet them, find out what they’re all about, how they work, and who they are. Reading reviews is helpful too!

The Package

Packages and pricing for any service vary wildly across the wedding industry. Some artists are more experienced than others, and some have a variety of packages that offer everything you could imagine. Will your painting be framed? Will you have to pay for shipping? Are there travel fees? Can you add additional people to the artwork? How long will it be until you receive it? You will have to compare pricing packages and find the one that offers what you are looking for. Many artists are happy to work with you on your custom ideas - don’t be afraid to ask.

The hardest choice of all - how big do you go? A larger painting makes a great statement piece as a focal point above a couch or fireplace. While smaller paintings can be collaged on a wall with your wedding photographs.

If you have a spot where you are planning to display the painting this can help to determine the best size for you. Work with your artist to find out what size they suggest in the space you have.

I hope this little list has helped guide you when it comes to deciding what you want from a live wedding painting!
